EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures has landed “Renegades,” a short story by Will Simmons, who is attached to adapt for film, with Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Mayday) directing.
Plot details for the project, described as an action-thriller, are under wraps. Hutch Parker (Venom, X-Men franchises) is set to produce under his deal at the studio.
Screenwriter Simmons previously adapted Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed sci-fi/action graphic novel Hardcore for Universal with Skybound producing and Adam Wingard directing. He sold his original feature spec Undo to New Line in a preemptive situation, which Beau Flynn is producing with Joost & Schulman directing. Additionally, his original action-adventure short story “Caliber” sold to Sony with Escape Artists producing and Simmons slated to adapt. Prior to this, he penned a Sleepy Hollow remake for Paramount, as well as a reboot of Internal Affairs for Paramount. Most recently, he wrote They Like the Dark, which will go into production this fall with Liam Hemsworth starring and Scott Free producing. He is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
Currently, longtime filmmaking partners Goldstein and Daley are developing the next Star Trek film to come from Paramount; they’ll direct and produce from their own script. Most recently, they wrote, directed and produced Mayday, a Cold War-era buddy action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, which streams on Apple TV beginning September 4. Also known for projects like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Vacation and Game Night, they are repped by WME, Fourth Wall Management and Hansen Jacobson.
