James Cameron Quashes ‘Offensive’ Rumors of OceanGate Series

James Cameron has definitively quashed rumors that he’s in talks about a series on the last voyage of the Titan submersible.

Titan was created by OceanGate Inc. to transport five people 4,000 meters deep to the site of the Titanic wreck. The submersible went missing off the coast of St. John’s, Newfoundland, after its communication systems began failing an hour and 30 minutes after its descent. All five people on board were declared dead in late June.

In February, Cameron had posted footage of the first discovery of the Titanic shipwreck in 1986 by the research submersible HOV (Human Occupied Vehicle) Alvin.

In 2012, Cameron had piloted a submersible called the Deepsea Challenger to the ocean’s deepest point in the Mariana Trench’s Challenger Deep, which is 35,876 feet deep. There, Cameron collected samples and filmed the experience for a Nat Geo documentary.

Since the Titan sank, there have been rumors that Cameron was working on a show about the tragedy. He conclusively put that to rest on Sunday. The latest was from Rupert Murdoch’s U.K. tabloid The Sun, which claimed that the “Titanic” director was approached by a streamer to make a drama series on the subject.

Cameron shut down the rumors swiftly.

“I don’t respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now. I’m NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be,” Cameron tweeted.

Meanwhile, OceanGate has shut down its website and deleted most of its social media accounts. “OceanGate Expeditions has suspended all exploration and commercial operations,” says the organization’s website.
