Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has received the endorsement of the International Alliance of Theatrical State Employees, key industry support in her primary race for reelection next month.
The California IATSE Council said in a statement on Wednesday, “Karen Bass has been fighting for film and television workers her whole career. She wrote California’s original film and television production tax credit while she was speaker of the California Assembly, and as Mayor she’s done more to bring our jobs back to Los Angeles than anyone in city government.”
Bass also has been endorsed by Teamsters 399 and the American Federation of Musicians Local 47. The backing of such unions may help in particular in a low-turnout primary, as labor can bring organizational strength to break through on turnout.
IATSE cited Bass’ efforts to streamline permitting and support for expanded tax credits. The flight of production jobs from the region has been a central focus on the race, as her main rivals, Councilmember Nithya Raman and reality show personality Spencer Pratt, have propsoed their own plans to boost production.
