HS Sports Roundup: Hill captures golf crown, Colin Elias grabs Shore-to-Shore title; CSI/McCown records upset hoops win

On Wednesday, St. Joseph Hill and Notre Dame Academy squared off for the CHSAA girls’ golf championship, which saw the Hilltoppers emerge with the crown thanks to a 3-2 triumph on extra holes.

NDA finished 7-1 during the regular season, the division’s best record, which included a pair of wins over Hill, which finished in second place with a 6-2 record. But the tables were turned on Wednesday.

Olivia Albano and Michaela Aversa tallied triumphs for Hill, but Rachel Perine and Rowan Fossella equalled them for NDA. Knotted at 2-2, Katarina Albano stepped up for the Hilltoppers and drained a six-foot par putt on her second playoff hole to clinch the crown.

“This match wasn’t a surprise because both teams were well coached and very competitive during the year,” said Hill coach James Garin. “Players were making great shots all day long and the extra holes were no different. Katarina knocked in [the putt] or we’d still be playing.

“Coaching this team was a pleasure this year,” he concluded.

SHORE-TO-SHORE CLASSIC

Colin Elias captured the Second Annual Shore-to-Shore Classic title, repeating as champion after claiming the event’s inaugural crown a year ago. Elias shot -1 on the second day of the event to finish atop the leaderboard at even par — 10 strokes better than the next best finisher.

The event was played at both Silver Lake and South Shore.

Tottenville freshman James Lamantia (+10) finished second, while Monsignor Farrell’s Cole Schiro (+12) rounded out the top three after shooting even par over the final nine holes. Isaiah Williams shot even par over one round, but did not participate in the second round.

Elias, who hosted the event which was sponsored by Next Level Indoor Golf, was more proud of the tournament than of his own masterful performance. The $40 entry fee per player was donated to NYC Junior Golf.

“I’m so proud to have hosted such a great event and to have played so well in it,” said Elias. “I’m so thankful for the many kids who showed up to play, for my parents helping out, my coaches and sponsors, and for everyone else who made this possible.

“To play well in the event was icing on the cake, and I’m so excited for the season ahead,” he concluded.

Julianna Anderson earned the win on the bump, and also collected a pair of hits and three RBI at the dish. Anderson was a terror on the base paths as well, racking up five pilfers in last week’s victory.

Mikayla Dansky and Julianna Raimonda excelled in the middle infield at shortstop and second base, respectively, but also teamed for five hits and six RBI to pace the offensive output.
