How Mavericks’ Kristaps Porzingis cost a sports bettor over $76,000 last week

Remember how Kristaps Porzingis missed his first shot in the Dallas Mavericks’ 95-94 loss to the Kings in Sacramento on Wednesday?

No?

Jim James remembers, and he’ll never forget. In fact, KP’s botched layup may haunt James for the rest of his days.

James, a user of the FanDuel Sportsbook app, bet $100 on a four-way parlay, wagering that Porzingis — along with Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics, Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns and Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz — would make the first basket of their respective games that evening.

A successful parlay would have paid $76,320.

Brown made his bucket. As did Booker. As did Gobert.

It’s up to you KP…

Pain.

Knowing the full context of what that shot meant, that’s probably the biggest “oof” of the Mavericks’ season. The league’s third-tallest player couldn’t make that shot, and it was costly, in more ways than one.

Dallas would lose the game on a Chimezie Metu buzzer-beater. James lost a small fortune when De’Aaron Fox scored moments after KP’s gaffe. And FanDuel became $100 richer.
