Loudoun County’s most luxurious — and highest priced — property currently on the market is a historic estate which dates to 1795 and is listed for $27,500,000.
Listing agent Peter Leonard-Morgan of Hunt Country Sotheby’s International Realty said the home — known as Llangollen — is owned by Donald and Patrician Brennan, who purchased the 1,100-acre property on Trappe Road in Upperville in 2007. Donald Brennan was previously a managing director with Morgan Stanley and once owned Waterford Crystal.
“The story of Llangollen can be traced from its late 18th century beginnings as a grant from the King of England through the building of its patent house, which today is a beautifully restored, functioning section of the larger home, which was gradually enlarged over the centuries,” Leonard-Morgan said.
The 12,500-square-foot manor house features 17 fireplaces, nine bedrooms and eight bathrooms and is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is now a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.
Leonard-Morgan said the land was deeded to its original owner and the founder of Middleburg, Leven Powell, by Lord Fairfax.
Equestrian pursuits have a long history at Llangollen, he said. From the 1930s, the property grew into a “formidable” racehorse operation with its 24-stall horseshoe shaped stable and 5/8-mile training track. The current owners have reintroduced polo to Llangollen, he said. There are three world class polo fields and an arena and it serves as the home of Virginia International Polo (VIP).
In addition to the main home, there is a jockey guest house, a stone garage with an apartment, eight tenant houses, six barns providing 89 stalls, nine run-in sheds, an ice house, potting shed and more.
Since its listing, Leonard-Morgan said the property has been highlighted by Sotheby’s as one of the most iconic properties worldwide.
Famous visitors have ranged from the Marquis de Lafayette, during this tour of the United States, to Bing Crosby, he added.
The current owners are history buffs and talked for hours about the history of Llangollen, he said. They have also made a considerable investment in serving as a steward for the property to bring it to beyond even its original glory.“This has resulted in a 200-year-old manor house presenting in impeccable condition, with craftsmanship and design methods of old having been strictly adhered to,” he said.
