COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Seth Small made a 28-yard field goal as time expired and Texas A&M stunned top-ranked Alabama 41-38 to end the Crimson Tide’s winning streak at 19 games. Defending national champion Alabama had scored 21 straight points — capped by a TD reception and 2-point conversion grab by Jameson Williams — to take a 38-31 lead with five minutes to go. Texas A&M tied it at 38 when Zach Calzada connected with Ainias Smith for a 25-yard touchdown strike with three minutes left. Calzada was hit as he threw the strike and had to be helped off the field but returned for the next drive after a visit to the medical tent. Calzada returned after the Aggies forced a punt to orchestrate the winning drive.
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Stetson Bennett passed for 231 yards and two touchdowns and led No. 2 Georgia past No. 18 Auburn for the second straight year in a 34-10 victory Saturday. The nation’s top defense gave up only its second touchdown of the year for the Bulldogs, who were still without injured starting quarterback JT Daniels. None of that kept Georgia from another comfortable SEC win and a fifth straight in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.Bennett made his first college start in a Top 10 matchup with Auburn last season.
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — No. 17 Mississippi stopped a 2-point conversion with no time left in regulation and the Rebels beat No. 13 Arkansas 52-51. The Razorbacks scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass from KJ Jefferson to Warren Thompson as time expired to pull within a point and decided to go for the win. Jefferson rolled right and under extended pressure from Sam Williams and Travius Robinson, overthrew Treylon Burks in the end zone. Ole Miss took the lead with 1:07 remaining as Matt Corral threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Sanders.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Will Levis threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more scores and No. 16 Kentucky dominated LSU throughout in a 42-21 blowout Saturday night. The Wildcats have their first 6-0 start since 1950, improved to 4-0 in the Southeastern Conference and earned a second consecutive win over a conference heavyweight. Their biggest challenge looms at No. 2 Georgia next week in an East Division showdown, and they’ll enter with their best performance since the season opener. Levis had a huge hand in that, with the quarterback bouncing back from a lackluster stretch to account for three second-half scores alone as Kentucky pulled away to a 35-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Emory Jones had a career-high four touchdowns passes, potentially quieting calls for backup Anthony Richardson, and No. 20 Florida routed woeful Vanderbilt 42-0. It was a feel-good victory for the Gators on homecoming after a gut-wrenching loss at Kentucky essentially knocked coach Dan Mullen’s team out of contention in the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division. Florida (4-2, 2-2 SEC) won its eighth straight in the series and its 30th in the past 31 meetings. The Commodores (2-4, 0-2) dropped their 15th consecutive league game.
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Badie rushed for a career-high 217 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Missouri to a 48-35 victory over North Texas. He ripped off a 52-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to help the Tigers build a 31-7 halftime lead. The Mean Green outgained Missouri 491-474 but were foiled by three turnovers, including a tipped interception that defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo returned 40 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
UNDATED (AP) — The last time the No. 1 team in the country lost to an unranked team was 2008. The last time Alabama lost to an unranked team was 2007. Texas A&M snapped both of those streaks and brought true chaos to this college football season. A&M’s upset, the biggest victory of Jimbo Fisher’s tenure in College Station, capped yet another thrilling Saturday in a season that is trying hard to make up for the pandemic-plagued mess of 2020. Toss Alabama on the pile of title contenders who have already been taken down. A playoff without Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson is a very real possibility.
