Henry Winkler Evacuated from Dublin Hotel Fire After Thinking Alarms Were ‘Clock Radio’

Henry Winkler was among the many hotel guests who had to evacuate The Shelbourne hotel in Dublin, Ireland amid a fire on Wednesday, June 12.

The blaze occurred on the fifth floor of the 1824 hotel at 10:38 a.m. local time, the Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed to PEOPLE.

Winkler, 78, said he had just arrived in the city the night before and caught off guard by the incident.

“When I heard the fire alarm, I thought it was the clock radio. I thought somebody had set the alarm before we got there, you know, like another guest. And finally I went into another room and it was still buzzing,” he told local news outlet RTE.

He explains that he then called the front desk and “the woman said in a very calm voice, ‘Yes, we’re all evacuating, you must evacuate right now.’”

The Happy Days star continues, “We came last night, our plane was delayed in London for about three-and-a-half hours. This morning, we got up and evacuated.” The actor was in good spirits despite the wakeup call. “It was an amazing adventure right here in Dublin. I cannot wait to see the rest of Dublin,” he said.

A representative for Winkler tells PEOPLE, “All is well and he is doing a show tonight in Dublin.”

Winkler added that the Dublin Fire Brigade was “wonderful” for rushing to the scene and getting the fire under control.

“Firemen are some of my favorite human beings. Firemen and firewomen. They run in when other people are running out,” he tells the outlet.

The actor shared a snap of him posing with some of the firefighters outside of the hotel on Wednesday, June 12.

“Dublin’s finest does a great job when our hotel is evacuated on our first morning !!!!” he captioned the post.

The Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed to PEOPLE that six engines reported to the scene.

“A prompt and effective evacuation by staff helped enormously at the scene and the fire was brought under control by 1130 hrs,” the fire brigade added in a statement. “Firefighting operations ceased at 1158 hrs and traffic restrictions are expected to be lifted shortly.”

The management team at The Shelbourne confirmed that the fire alarm was activated due to a “small electrical fire.”

“The safety of our guests and employees is always our first priority.  The incident was promptly dealt with by the Dublin Fire Brigade and our on-site safety and security team. Guests have now returned and the hotel has resumed normal operations,” they added in a statement shared with PEOPLE.
