Hard to quit that cheap trial? Change may be afoot

A line from an Eagles’ song dating to 1977 serves as an introduction to today’s column: “‘Relax,’ said the night man/ ‘We are programmed to receive/ You can check out any time you like/ But you can never leave.'”

Welcome to the Hotel California. Such a lovely place.

Today, we’re staying at the hotel in a room we wound up in by hitting the “free trial” button found on a website the other day. You may have checked into one of these rooms, thinking that, as the free-trial notice said, you could “cancel at any time in the free-trial period and your credit card will not be charged.”

Were it only true. In many cases, it is not. The entanglement happens so often, in fact, that there is a bipartisan move afoot in Congress to pass legislation requiring such trials offer an easy way out.
