The Tulane University baseball team (2-0) defeated the University of Massachusetts Lowell (0-2) in a 11-0 ballgame on Saturday afternoon inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.The Green Wave played a clean game in the field and weren’t fooled by UML’s pitchers as they collected 11 hits while only striking out twice as a group.”I think we can be a superior defensive team,” Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. “The thing with a good defensive team is that it’s routine. The plays that we are supposed to make we do. The great defensive plays don’t show up that often, but when they’re showing up right now our guys are making them.”Sophomore Dylan Carmouche dazzled in his debut on the mound for Tulane. The Mississippi State transfer completed six scoreless innings, striking out seven and allowing only four hits.”Nothing but good stuff to say,” Jewett said of Carmouche. “He showed maturity and was in-control, throwing strikes. I was really proud of him.” It was a day of firsts for freshman Brennan Lambert. The first-year player got the start at designated hitter and collected his first hit, RBI, and home run in three different at bats. “It’s good to get a lot of firsts out of the way,” Lambert said. “I just can’t thank these coaches and my teammates enough for preparing me and putting me in the best situation to be successful. It all goes back to them.”The Green Wave wasted no time getting on the board as Luis Aviles drove home Jared Hart with a line drive single to left in the bottom of the first. Bennett Lee gunned down a would-be base stealer in the top of the third. He also tracked down a ball that got by Aviles at first and threw out the runner trying to take the extra bag at second for the third out of the fourth.Lambert doubled down the right field line for his first career hit in the bottom of the fourth. The freshman scored later in the inning on an RBI-groundout by Jacob LaPrairie to make it a 2-0 ballgame. Aviles came up big again for the Wave in the bottom of the fifth when he laced another RBI single to left, scoring Hebert from second and extending the lead to 3-0. Lambert came up next and promptly recorded his first career RBI as he singled up the middle, scoring Bennett Lee and pushing the lead to 4-0.The Green Wave added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch and a fielding error by the Red Hawks’ outfield.In the bottom of the seventh, Lambert launched a fastball over the wall in left, widening the gap to 7-0. Ethan Groff then joined the hit party, lining a double to right that scored Engelhard for Tulane’s eighth run of the day.In the bottom of the eighth, the Wave loaded the bases before freshman Gavin Schulz lifted a fly ball to right that was misplayed by the River Hawks, allowing all three runners to score.
