The weather is getting warmer, the sun is setting later and our collective serotonin is returning.
This, of course, is evident in the past two weeks of NHL fashion. Players are getting lighter, brighter, floraly and suspendery, and we at The Athletic’s NHL Style Power Rankings are thrilled about it.
There have also been some tasteful entrances and exits in light of the trade deadline — who knew there’d be a fashion storyline with all the trades. But there was, and we’ve been on it.
Let’s get into a particularly strong edition of the style rankings.
Honorable mention: Yes, I’m aware that David Pastrnak got a hat trick after wearing this ensemble.
Yes, I believe the two are directly correlated. Yes, the King stays King. But the rules are the rules, and even though we are huge proponents of sustainable fashion and outfit repeating here at the ole rankings, outfits we’ve already given the stamp of approval on are automatically disqualified. Sorry, Pasta. We see you and we love it.
10. Ian ColeDebuting at No. 10
Cole has been on the style rankings radar for a while now, but he finally makes his debut today due to two accessories: The autism awareness pin (zoom in) and the missing teeth.
We already appreciate the solid eye for layering Cole has shown throughout the season — especially the nostalgic plaid jacket, dark brown tie moment here. It’s even better that he was wearing it to meet his new friend, Canes fan and fellow big-smiler Lorelai (story above).
9. Elvis MerzlikinsPreviously: UnrankedHighest all-time ranking: 2
Do the Bruins need to trade for Merzlikins so he and Pastrnak can walk into the arena together in these outfits? If I’m GM Don Sweeney, I’m making a few calls.
Nothing like some tasteful suspenders at the beginning of the spring.
