Father of 6 Killed in Alleged Hit-and-Run While Celebrating Anniversary, Birthday

A Texas man is being mourned by his family and loved ones after he was killed in an alleged hit-and-run while visiting Houston to celebrate his anniversary.

Dustin Trey Dorcz, of Lufkin, Texas, died in a crash ten days before his birthday on the early morning on Sept. 15, the Houston Police Department said in a press release last week.

He was not named in the initial press release but has been named by his family in his obituary and in The Lufkin Daily News and on KHOU 11.

A witness said Dorcz, 35, was walking on a freeway near the East Interstate Highway 10 in Houston when a vehicle of unknown make and model allegedly struck him, per HPD’s statement.

“The vehicle did not stop to render aid and fled the scene,” the statement said.

“I just can’t imagine leaving someone behind like that,” Dorcz’s wife Lindsey Dorcz told KHOU 11. Lindsey was not at the scene at the time of the crash, per the outlet.

A witness reportedly told Lindsey that the victim was “very close to the guardrail, far away from the roadway,” she said, per KHOU 11. An HPD officer told the outlet police spoke with a witness, but did not provide further details.

In her interview with KHOU 11, Lindsey said the couple were visiting Houston to celebrate their fifth anniversary and Dustin’s birthday.

Dustin’s obituary states he was going to turn 36 on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

In his obituary, Dustin was remembered as a “100% family man” and someone who was always the life of the party.

“Dustin was a jack of all trades,” reads a part of the obituary. “He was everyone’s go-to ‘fixer’. One of the hardest working men any of us knew, and would always make it happen for his kids and wife.”

Dustin leaves behind six children, the youngest of whom is 6 years old, per the obituary.

As of Wednesday, HPD did not have any further update on a suspect or suspects, a department spokesperson told PEOPLE.

“If that person is watching this, maybe God can work on you and you can give my husband the justice he deserves and come clean,” Lindsey told KHOU 11.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4065 or speak anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
