A plan to do away with European Union minimum road tax rates on trucks could backfire, finance ministers from some of the bloc’s countries said Tuesday.
EU countries are currently free to levy annual road taxes on heavy goods vehicles but must respect minimum rates set out in a 1999 directive. Bloc members are reconsidering a draft directive—proposed in 2017— that would amend the 1999 law and let countries zero all the minimum rates if they prefer tolls or other road-usage based charges for trucks.
