This is in response to the Jan. 24 Mirror opinion letter.
The writer alleges democracy is in peril because of Republican obstruction and voter suppression.
This is pure political hypocrisy. They are doing nothing different than Democrats do when Republicans control Congress.
Voter suppression is a myth.
Several Republican states have recently modified their voting laws. They have expanded voting opportunities while putting safeguards in place to protect the integrity of the process.
Some of these safeguards include requiring some sort of voter ID as well as addressing ballot harvesting concerns. Ballot harvesting is the bulk collection of mail-in ballots by special interest groups.
Republicans oppose the voting rights bills the left is pushing for good reason. The media would have you believe these bills are designed to protect voting rights, but they are really just a scheme to keep the left in power.
Rather than relying on media spin, people should actually look at what they are proposing. Here are just a few of the troubling proposals in the 665 pages of legislation:
* Automatic voter registration. Department of motor vehicles, corrections and welfare offices, federal subsidized housing agencies, etc., will automatically enroll people to vote. They would have to opt out if they didn’t want to participate.
* Same-day registration at the polls.
* Outlaw voter ID laws.
* Prohibit ID requirements for obtaining absentee ballots.
* Increase mail-in voting and number of ballot drop boxes.
* Automatically mail ballots to voters.
* Require states to allow vote trafficking (harvesting).
These bills are ripe with potential fraud.
It’s not hard to envision activists collecting thousands of ballots, filling them out and depositing them in drop boxes. It’s also not hard to see organized voting fraud by individuals claiming to be registered voters.
Without ID, how would anyone know?
Protecting democracy is paramount, which is why these bills should be defeated.
