DBS Taps Sustainable Finance Expert for Board Committee

DBS Group has appointed an outside expert to its board sustainability committee (BSC) as a non-director member.

Southeast Asia’s largest bank, DBS, named Ben Caldecott to the BSC, which was set up in March to advance the bank’s net-zero commitments. He is the founding director of the Oxford Sustainable Finance Group at the University of Oxford Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, the bank said in a statement filed to the Singapore Exchange. Caldecott is also the inaugural Lombard Odier Associate Professor of Sustainable Finance at the University of Oxford, DBS said, noting it is the first endowed professorship of sustainable finance.

Other roles he holds include being an advisory board member of Climate Impact X, a joint venture between DBS, Singapore Exchange (SGX), Standard Chartered Bank and Singapore’s state-owned investment company Temasek Holdings, the filing said.

Sustainability Finance Expertise

The BSC is chaired by DBS CEO Piyush Gupta, and its members include current DBS board members Chng Kai Fong, Judy Lee and Tham Sai Choy, the filing said.

Gupta noted the BSC was established to highlight that sustainability is a «strategic imperative» for the bank.

«As a leading global thinker in the field of sustainability finance, Ben’s insights and expertise will be of immense value as we continue to embed sustainability into our business. I look forward to working with him as DBS pushes ahead with helping our clients transition to a lower-carbon economy and realising a sustainable future,» Gupta said in the statement.
