Dan Ashworth to become Newcastle’s sporting director immediately

Dan Ashworth will become Newcastle United’s new sporting director with immediate effect.

Newcastle have come to an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion for the release of Ashworth from his contract at the south coast club.

The Athletic reported last week that Newcastle had reopened talks with Brighton over Ashworth, and were determined to appoint him before the start of the 2022-23 campaign.

The 51-year-old had resigned from his role as technical director at Brighton in February, with David Weir promoted to replace him on an interim basis, but was placed on gardening leave instead of leaving the club entirely.

A Newcastle statement said: “Newcastle United are delighted to announce that Dan Ashworth will become the club’s sporting director after an agreement was reached with Brighton & Hove Albion to release him from his current contractual obligations with immediate effect.”

A statement from Brighton added: “The terms of this agreement, which is subject to regulatory approval, will remain confidential between the clubs.”

Weir has subsequently been named Brighton’s permanent technical director.
