Nigerian comedian and skit-maker, Lawal Michael Nasiru Bolaji, popularly known as Nasboi, has released a new song featuring ace singer, Wande Coal titled, “Umbrella.” Interestingly, it’s not the music that’s causing a stir but the energy behind the marketing. Comedians and non-comedians alike have jumped on the ‘umbrella trend,’ resulting in one of the most fascinating acts of unity toward promoting a piece of music in the country.
For marketing, Nasboi enlisted most of the top content creators in the country, each adding their unique flair to spice things up. For example, one creator had to switch his signature costume for that of his colleague and produced an absolutely hilarious skit as a show of support for Nasboi’s new work. Perhaps, what has made this trend resonate with Nigerians is its uniting spirit — that sense of brotherliness that sees members of this young industry of comedy skit-makers in Nigeria uniting in support of their own. Indeed, it’s truly satisfying to watch.
While the song in focus is a good track with an addictive tune and rhythm, you can’t say with a straight face that Nasboi is a great vocalist. Far from it. But his energy and ability to unite all the forces in the content creation space is commendable. And, as expected, the trend has moved past the sit-maker circle into the mainstream with music industry heavy-weights like Don Jazzy, Kizz Daniel, and Iyanya having fun with it.
The power of unity
The support that comedy skit-makers in Nigeria enjoy is a thing worth admiring. While there are obvious divides among the creators, especially on regional levels, when a powerful person from one region brings out a project, others unite to promote it. Nasboi’s Umbrella is trending on major social media platforms, reiterating that when Nigerians unite, a lot can happen.
Nasboi started making comedy skits mimicking Davido’s harsh but straining voice just to draw attention to his musical side. However, he evolved as a comedy actor portraying a variety of alter ego characters from Akpan to Rufus and Ejike Cambodia. Today, he is known for portraying older Igbo archetypal characters, although he isn’t Igbo but a Yoruba man from Osun State in Western Nigeria. His ability to almost flawlessly present the mannerisms of Igbo businessmen is commendable, and another highlight of what the spirit of unity in Nigeria can attain.
