Here’s What’s Happening in Davidson County: There are new, big, stuffed sweet treats on the menu at Nick’s Old Fashion Hamburger House; Lexington’s Carter Lumber is expanding; and a new self-storage business opens in Welcome.
Theses snack creations are not your momma’s cookies
Nick’s Old Fashion Hamburger House in Welcome has stood out from other hamburger joints since opening in 2010 with its fresh, never frozen daily hand-patted burgers.
Now owner Jeremy Haynes is upping the restaurant’s dessert game with gourmet cookies made by Simon Mercado of Winston-Salem who owners Chippeekiyay Cookies. About three weeks after Haynes launched the cookie offerings here, he said he sees it was the right move to start selling the cookies because they sell out within two to three days. Still, Mercado had a tough time convincing Hayes to carry his cookies.
“I’ve had a lot of people who wanted to put their cookies in here,” Hayes said. “I’m really limited with space in here, especially counter space. I wish IÂ had a counter of cakes, but where would I put them. But Simon, he was persistent. He kept asking. We worked it out.”
In addition, Haynes helped Mercadoa find a commercial kitchen where he can make his cookies, which are sold mainly at pop up shops and special events at Triad area businesses and festivals.
“He told me he was looking for a place, so I told him I knew a caterer in Arcadia who was looking to not have to pay all the rent on her place where she also used to have a store front. It was Nana’s. I hooked him up with Terri (Mello) and he bakes out of there now in Davidson County. It worked out for both of them because she still runs her catering business out of there.”
Chippeekiyay Cookies are described on its Facebooks, Instagram and Tik Tok pages as big cookies with a retro twist. Most of the cookies are named after references to ’80s movies or songs, such as the new Christmas cookie called the Griswold Family Special, a reference to “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” It is loaded with sugar cookie Hershey Kisses, white chocolate chips, crushed candy canes, stuffed marshmallows and a Trader Joe’s Candy Cane Joe cookie.
This holiday cookie is one of four sold at Nick’s for now, but there will be changes with the season and holidays. For example, Nick’s recently had a chocolate chip cookie stuffed with Oreos. The three flavors of Chippeekiyay Cookies that are always sold at Nick’s include chocolate chip, red velvet and Rocky Road. The cookies are six to eight inches in diameter and sell for $5 to $8 each.
“He drops off fresh cookies ever Monday and we are usually sold out by Wednesday,” Haynes said. “I feel good that we added them. I wish I had done it sooner. It’s nice to partner with another organic brand. Simon is a real hustler like me. He didn’t give in trying to get in here and I am glad he didn’t.”
Carter Lumber Co. plans expansion
Carter Lumber Co. is expanding with plans to build a new open lumber storage building, according to the Lexington City building permits report.
Paul Briggs, a Lexington architect, filed for the permit. Carter Lumber Co. is located at 747 Old Hargrave Road. The new building will have a value of nearly $1.4 million when complete, according to the report.
Calls to Carter Lumber officials seeking more information were not returned.
Welcome Self Storage opens
There is a new place to store all your stuff you don’t have room for at your home.
Welcome Self Storage opened in November at 175 Hinkle Lane in the Welcome community, and is owned by a local family. The facility has 160 units. Some of the units are drive-up with outside entrance and others are inside and climate-controlled, said Matt Kostelic, the company manager,
“Every unit has a Bluetooth lock on it that can be controlled from your smart phone,” he continued. “You have 24/7 access.”
There is a security gate at the entrance and the location has security cameras. In addition, Welcome Self Storage has uncovered boat and RV parking at assigned paved spots.
The property is where the former C&D Hardware store was located.
