BMW reveals its EV future with K flagship SUV, new sport sedan

BMW rolled out the next steps in its evolution to electric vehicles at a presentation in Detroit on Wednesday evening, unveiling a pair of new EVs scheduled for sale in the United States in March.

The iX SUV and i4 sport sedan go into production in Germany this fall. The iX is about the size of BMW’s popular X5 midsize SUV.

It’s based on a new platform that will underpin a range of EVs. The i4 is essentially BMW’s current 4-series Gran Coupe, modified for electric power.

BMW showed off the 2022 BMW iX inside the Garden Theater in Detroit on July 2, 2021.

Both vehicles will have an EPA-rated range of around 300 miles on a fully charged battery, BMW electric vehicles product manager Don Smith said.

Prices will start at $55,400 for the i4 and $83,200 for the iX.

The lower case “i” is BMW’s designation for its sub-brand of electric vehicles.

The iX will be BMW’s benchmark for all types of sustainability, not just carbon-free emissions. It will feature headliners and carpets made from reclaimed fishing nets and reclaimed wood trim.

BMW North America executive vice president Shawn Bugbee said 50% of all BMWs sold around the world will be either all-electric or plug-in hybrid models by 2030. BMW has not named a target date for when EVs will completely replace internal combustion engines in its output.
