As COVID restrictions are being relaxed in most parts of the world, Pope Francis recently removed Puerto Rican Bishop Fernandez Torres from his post for telling Catholics that, if it violated their conscience, they could refuse to be vaccinated.
Fernandez sought, but was denied, a formal hearing on the subject, and while it’s certainly within the Pope’s discretion to dismiss a bishop, it shows how politically active he’s become. As a Catholic, I’m certainly okay with the Pope “weighing in” on secular matters, but I’m not sure it’s appropriate for him to actively take sides on a non-religious matter that has two legitimate but opposing schools of thought, particularly when he won’t give the “other side” a hearing.

Let’s team up to welcome Ukrainian refugees
Cincinnatians and our Tristate neighbors are a generous and welcoming people. We all know this. Let’s show Ukrainians and the world the same.
Among other things, we need to charter flights from Warsaw to CVG and reduce red tape so that our communities can more readily open their homes to Ukrainian refugees and facilitate the flow of humanitarian assistance into Ukraine’s war-torn country. The courageous people of Ukraine, including those from our sister city Kharkiv, have valiantly fought the unprovoked Russian aggressors for over a month. Sadly, Ukrainians continue to be subject to unspeakable atrocities, leading to an unrelenting refugee crisis.
It’s time for Cincinnatians and neighbors to coordinate and intensify our efforts. Glory to Ukraine!

Progressives are marginalizing women
In “woke” America almost anything is possible these days, and that was demonstrated this week when U.S. Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson stumbled answering the question: “What’s your definition of a woman?”
Maybe it was a tougher question than it appeared to be on the surface, because in the USA Today section of The Enquirer, they editorialized that Jackson did a good job with her response because “there’s no simple answer” to the question. It seems to me that progressives are now marginalizing women, and I’m not sure they even realize they’re doing it.

Republicans must find a respectable, qualified leader
I read Jason Williams’ account of the Republican U.S. Senate primary, and he nailed it. The primary is in a shambles, and it proves the GOP mindset – vicious, vulgar, heartless and afraid of Donald Trump.Â
It’s sad and unbelievable that a major party still caters to an immature, immoral, sore loser who cheats on his wives and taxes. Surely, there is a respectable, qualified leader out there somewhere – someone with leadership skills and the courage to step up against this embarrassing mess. NOW!
