The music icon, 75, was jamming out to his 1980 classic “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” while he performed in Connecticut at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Feb. 22, as seen in a TikTok video posted by a concert-goer.

But after spinning his microphone stand and tossing it toward the audience, Joel then appeared to stumble and fall backward, landing on his side.

Moments later, the five-time Grammy winner repositioned himself on his back as the audience erupted in applause, and he then appeared to get back up on his feet as the footage concluded.

The rest of Joel’s set continued on as planned, according to Setlist.FM, as the musician carried on with his encore performance by singing hits “Big Shot” and “You May Be Right.” Elsewhere in the show, Joel treated fans to classics including “Piano Man,” “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” and “Vienna.”

Joel’s recent gig at the Mohegan Sun took place before he is scheduled to perform at the Rogers Centre on March 15. The show is being billed as Joel’s first performance in over a decade in Toronto.

Joel is also set to make history in New York City later this summer when he performs at all three major N.Y.C. sports stadiums — Yankee Stadium, Citi Field and MetLife Stadium — making him the first artist to do so.

“I’m looking forward to playing these iconic stadiums this summer — each holds personal significance to me,” Joel told Billboard in a statement.

“There’s nothing like the energy of the crowds in New York, and sharing a stage with my friends, Rod StewartSting and Stevie Nicks, whose music always inspires me, is extremely rewarding,” he continued.

Joel’s Yankee Stadium visit will make him the first artist to ever perform at both the old Yankee Stadium, which closed following the 2008 season, and the updated Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009, The New York Daily News reported.

Joel recently concluded his longtime residency at Madison Square Garden last year, after playing a concert there every month from January 2014 to July 2024 (not including amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the absence of shows in June 2017 and December 2022).

His final MSG concert marked his 150th show at the venue, and a permanent banner was raised in his honor.

“It’s been a dream come true,” Joel told the crowd at the time. “I first came to Madison Square Garden when I was a 4-year-old to see the Circus and watch Gene Autry sing ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.’ And now, here I am doing this. Thanks, Mom!”

He added: “We don’t want to go either, but it’s time. It’s 10 years. None of us knew we were going to be able to do this for this long. This has been the most amazing gig that we’ve ever done ever.”
