Batwoman’s New Weapon Breaks a Vital Rule of Her Father Bruce’s Gadgets

In the latest issue of Batman/Catwoman, it’s revealed that the future daughter of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle has tech that breaks an unspoken rule.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman/Catwoman #11

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Batman/Catwoman, it’s revealed that the tech wielded by the future Batwoman breaks a pretty big rule her father had when he still wore the cowl as the original Batman. Possessing all manner of gadgets, vehicles, and resources thanks to Bruce Wayne’s billions, almost every tool the Caped Crusader used had one thing in common. However, Helena Wayne’s primary weapon circumvents the tradition created by the first Dark Knight.

In previous issues of Batman/Catwoman from Tom King and Clay Mann, the part of the storyline set in the future has seen Helena Wayne as Gotham’s new Dark Knight, having taken over for her father who recently passed away from old age. However, Bruce’s death saw Catwoman finally killing the Joker, something her late husband had always prevented her from doing. While Commissioner Dick Grayson has been wanting Batwoman to help him bring Selena in, Helena has been largely unwilling to turn in her mother.

Interestingly enough, the new Batman/Catwoman #11 sees Helena on comms with Grayson as she fights Inque, a villain of the future first seen in the animated Batman Beyond series. While Helena puts up a front and acts like Catwoman escaped her grasp, Batwoman is seen using a powerful electric shock-based weapon that easily takes Inque down. However, there’s nothing about the electric gadget that’s bat-themed, a major taboo considering how nearly every single gadget and vehicle owned by the original Batman was styled after the nocturnal creatures.

Batwoman’s electric weapon is undoubtedly cool in this new issue. Not only is it a great way to show that technology has advanced in the future, but it also makes Helena and her tactics more unique. However, it’s just not bat-themed. In the present, Bruce Wayne is a man who has a bat-bucket in his Batmobile in case someone throws up on the way to the Batcave. As such, Helena’s tech breaks the tradition in a pretty big way despite its inherent benefit.

Although Helena’s electric weapons housed in her gauntlets could potentially have some sort of bat-themed name, it isn’t shared in this new issue of Batman/Catwoman. While they’re very effective tools that allow Batwoman to easily one-shot her rivals, one has to wonder if the original Batman is rolling in his grave due to their lack of bat-theming. Perhaps a bat-name will be revealed in the issues to come from DC Comics.
