Barcelona are in the process of a rebuild whose start was long overdue. The Catalan giants have already made a shortlist of players they would want both in and out of the club. Some are part of the old guard, with Jordi Alba touted to leave. Others, like Philippe Coutinho, simply never managed to fit in.
It should come as no surprise that if one of the current players is replaced by someone better, then the club will seek to part ways. One such player is Memphis Depay. According to Javi Miguel, if Barcelona manage to acquire a top forward such as Erling Haaland in the summer, then the Dutchman will leave.
Depay has had quite a tough season with Barcelona thus far. The Dutchman has struggled to score at a rate as consistent as he perhaps would like. Some of this could boil down to confidence issues, but mostly his finishing is the main problem that plagues him and the team.
Despite these issues, he has eight La Liga goals, and is by quite some distance, even in injury, Barcelona’s highest-scoring player. If someone like Haaland would come, for instance, then he would have no position on the team. The wings would be occupied by Ansu Fati, possibly Ousmane Dembele and Ferran Torres.
If the Blaugrana fail to sell him, then they might use him as a substitute. Before Depay’s arrival, he was reportedly open to playing a secondary role. With this in mind, he can be the second choice forward. It remains to be seen what happens between now and next summer.
