Fans of the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” were all agog to know — was it planned?
Did Anne Hathaway wear that outfit to see Anna Wintour on purpose?
The ensemble in question — a brown crocodile print-embossed leather coat from Michael Kors and black turtleneck with bangs and ponytail, which Hathaway sported sitting next to Wintour at a Kors show during New York Fashion Week last month. It’s a look that seemed to be a direct reference to Andy Sachs, Hathaway’s character in the hit 2006 film.
Oscar winner Hathaway, a New York native who grew up in Millburn, played Andy opposite Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly in the movie, an adaptation of the 2003 bestselling book of the same name by Lauren Weisberger. The film was scripted by Aline Brosh McKenna, who grew up in Montvale, Demarest and Fort Lee.
Andy takes a job as an assistant to Miranda, a demanding fashion editor who is never pleased. The character is thought to be based on Vogue editor Anna Wintour — Weisberger worked as assistant to Wintour at the magazine for nearly a year.
Streep, a Summit native who grew up in Basking Ridge and Bernardsville, was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in “The Devil Wears Prada” (she won a Golden Globe). Patricia Field was also nominated for her costume design in the film.
So the look — that brown leather jacket, that black turtleneck, those bangs. All Andy, right?
Well, kind of.
The character wears a similar getup at the end of the film. She’s no longer working for Miranda, having left her assistant job, but sees her old boss out on the street and waves hello (Miranda does not wave back).
Hathaway wore the Kors outfit that was reminiscent of the look to the Kors show attended by Wintour and other celebrities like Serena Williams and New York Mayor Eric Adams.
Yes, she did sit right next to Wintour. But no, she did not intend the outfit — which included a matching, crocodile-style leather miniskirt — to reference her “Devil Wears Prada” character. Though she did pick up on the resemblance, pretty much right away.
“It was by accident,” Hathaway, 39, told NBC’s “Today” while promoting her upcoming movie “Armageddon Time,” which filmed in New Jersey and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
“I was supposed to wear something else, the shoes didn’t fit, this was the other outfit that came, and then my hairstylist … he said, ‘Oh, I know what to do,’ and he threw my hair up in a ponytail, and I looked in the mirror and I thought, ‘Oh, that’s funny. I wonder if anybody’ll notice?’ They noticed.”
