Inside Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, two heavyweights will battle it out for the ultimate bragging rights. Not only that, but Andy Ruiz Jr. and Luis Ortiz face off Sept. 4 in a clash that could potentially determine the next big heavyweight contender.
Ruiz returns to the ring for the first time since May 2021, when he beat Chris Arreola. A former heavyweight champion, Ruiz moved on from trainer Eddy Reynoso and hopes that can make a difference in this fight. A win could bring Ruiz one step closer to the top, something he achieved when he shocked the world by beating Anthony Joshua in 2019 to win the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles.
Right now, Ruiz is the betting favorite, but that doesn’t seem to faze Ortiz.
“I don’t pay attention to the odds. Boxing is such a great sport, because you come in with an idea of what you’re going to do, and it changes right away when you’re in the ring,” Ortiz said at the pre-fight news conference. “I come from a school of boxing that’s about adapting to what my opponent does. I don’t take anything for granted in the ring. But no matter what he does, I’m going in there to look for the knockout, that’s the ultimate goal.”
