Andrew Ahn gives update on potential ‘Fire Island’ sequel

Attention, girls and gays! The cast and crew of Fire Island have been plotting a return to the Pines.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about his upcoming remake of Ang Lee‘s cult classic rom-com The Wedding Banquet, director Andrew Ahn reveals that “there’s always been conversation about doing a sequel.”

“I don’t know if a real concrete idea has been formed yet, but there are things in the ether,” the filmmaker teases, adding that writer and star Joel Kim Booster “always jokes that it’s going to be like the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That, where it’s 30 years later and they’re older and gayer.”

“We’ll see what happens,” Ahn adds with a laugh.

A loose adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, the 2002 feature gives the classic Jane Austen tale a modern spin, following a group of queer friends (Booster, Bowen Yang, Zane Phillips, Matt Rogers, and Conrad Ricamora, among others) as they gather in the Fire Island Pines, a popular summer destination and haven for the queer community, for a week of love and laughter.

Ricamora, who portrayed Booster’s character’s Darcy-esque love interest, first teased a potential sequel last year, telling Out that the cast and crew were in a group chat and constantly spitballing ideas.

Ahn confirms that the group remains close. “We are part of a group chat. It’s nicknamed Pantry Girls after the Pines Pantry on Fire Island,” he says. “We’re so supportive of each other. It’s such a great group. We had a big Fire Island reunion yesterday at the Los Angeles premiere of The Wedding Banquet. We’re still in each other’s lives.”

The Wedding Banquet arrives in theaters on April 18.
