Are the US and China participating in the AI arms race?
Last year, the Pentagon carefully watched a human fighter pilot lose to an AI-powered enemy in a simulated dogfight. As technology changes the nature of war, the US military is working to innovate faster. But many are worried that it is already lagging behind its main enemy, China. What does AI mean for military power, and how is the debate over autonomous weapons unfolding in the diplomatic back channel? In the final episode of Tech Tonic this season, FT Innovation Editor John Thornhill will dive into military AI with US-China correspondent Demetri Sevastopulo. We heard from Colonel Daniel “Animal” Jabolsek, former Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Owork, Elsa B Kania of the Center for a New American Security, and David Edelman, who works on AI and public policy at MIT.
