The 70s was a huge decade in fashion where many new trends were born. From Farrah Fawcett and Bianca Jagger to Princess Diana and supermodel Iman there were so many style icons, but it was also an era during which fashion was so strongly connected to music. Woodstock Festival was held in 1969 and Glastonbury Festival began in 1970 with the likes of Diana Ross, David Bowie, Cher, and The Beatles hugely influencing popular culture and setting fashion trends.
What was so fascinating about the 70s, was that there was not one specific defining style of the era, but many various trends and aesthetics that influenced the sartorial landscape throughout the decade.
It was a time of freedom and connecting to nature, and this showed through the fashion trends with neutral colour palates, earthy tones and natural looks incredibly popular.
But there was another side to the 70s that was about disco, bright colours, statement fashion moments, and glamour. Diana Ross, the iconic disco queen, brought us endless incredible looks during this decade. Wearing sequins or multiple patterns in the same outfit were popular, as well as flared sleeves, knitwear & crotchet, floral and psychedelic prints, denim, patchwork, bralettes and boots.
A DIY approach was also often taken, where people would happily make their own clothes, or upcycle, and customise their wardrobe; a sustainably conscious move that is undoubtedly gaining traction again today.
We are seeing a return to so many trends and aesthetics from the 70s in 2021. While many of us have a closer connection to nature, after being at home in loungewear for so long others are more than ready for some glamour and disco style.
