Grace Dunnuck has her own style. And she showed off that style during the Hamilton County 4-H Fair’s Fashion Revue on the Friday night of the Fair, bringing home a Grand Champion award in both Fashion Revue and in Sewing Construction for a coat that she made and modeled.
The 18-year-old is a 2021 graduate of Fishers High School and a 10-year Hamilton County 4-H’er.
It’s her 10th year in the sewing project for which she competed in the Suits & Coats category of the Senior Division.
“This a really big deal because it’s my final year. And I really put all of my effort into this,” said a smiling Dunnuck just after receiving the awards on stage at the end of the Fashion Revue in the Hamilton County Exhibition Center in Noblesville. “I’ve been looking forward to making this coat. So it means a lot to have all of my hard work over the last 10 years of sewing in 4-H and outside of 4-H to really get me where I am now.”
The coat is a wool-blend overcoat, pretty casual, kind of streetwear-looking with lined pockets.
“This took me a few weeks of work and preparation to put it all together,” she said.
Dunnuck credits her grandmother for the inspiration to sew.
“I worked with my grandmother; she’s my sewing teacher.”
Her part-time job also has been a huge help in learning by doing. “I work at a tailoring shop and do a lot of suits and coats. So I was able to really pull this one together and do a lot of more professional, right-way kind of things, for it.”
Winning Grand Champion at the county level means that Dunnuck will go on and show and model the coat at the Indiana State Fair.
The daughter of Luke and Ann Dunnuck, the 4-H’er was fourth runner-up in the 2021 Hamilton County 4-H Fair Queen Pageant on July 9 and was busy throughout the 4-H Fair helping with project check-ins and giving out ribbons during the project judging, attending Fair events and more.
What was her favorite part of the 4-H Fair? “Meeting people,” she said. “And becoming friends with kids who do the same projects as me and kids from the pageant and having people to hang out with at the Fair and who have shared interests.” Dunnuck has completed about 33 4-H projects over her 10 years.
Favorite food at the Fair? “Grilled cheese.”
Why she is involved in 4-H? “I love 4-H because I get to do what I love for it and be passionate about it, and get to see my hard work pay off with awards and judging and judges’ comments so I can know how well I really am doing and what I need to improve on.”
At the Fashion Revue, she said, “Thank you to my grandma, Janet Gick, and to my family for supporting me.”
Dunnuck will compete at the State Fair in the 4-H Fashion Revue Judging, where 4-H members model their sewn outfits and garments. The Judging is 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at the 4-H Exhibit Hall on the State Fairgrounds’ northwest side. The State Fair returns this summer with 18 days, including four weekends, July 30-Aug. 22, but closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Discount Fair advance sale tickets are available online through July 29.
