When Western Michigan University’s staff, faculty and students were asked the question, what would you ask President Edward Montgomery during his office hours, the results speak for themselves.

At the January 20, Board of Trustees meeting President Montgomery announced that anyone from the WMU community would have an opportunity to speak with him during his new office hours as of Tuesday, Jan 18.

These office hours are available every other Tuesday, in 20-minute time slots, for virtual or in-person meetings in the Seibert Administration Building.

This sparked conversation from WMU community members on various social media platforms about what people would ask Montogomery when given the chance.

Common themes among the questions posed included COVID-19, staff cuts, the rebrand and Montgomery’s recent raise and bonus.

  1. How many staff have been fired since March 2020?

  2. Why haven’t you made time for students, faculty & staff before now?

  3. Why only 3 hours a month?

  4. Instead of all these renovations to the campus, how about we think about not raising your $27,000-a-year tuition every year?

  5. Why is tuition so expensive?

  6. Why don’t students paying tuition deserve free parking?

  7. Explain why you alone deserve a large bonus and raise, but the people who teach & provide innumerable other forms of labor all across this campus deserve next to nothing?

  8. When will the mask mandate end?

  9. Why do you continue to roll out the new ‘visual identity’ after all the blowback?

  10. How much did the university lose fiscally during COVID-19?

Community members can sign up for office hours online.
