Finance Committee votes on new Triumph Stadium

Greenville County Finance Committee voted 3 to 2 Monday night not to allow county administrators to negotiate a stadium deal for a potential new home for the Greenville Triumph Soccer Club. The soccer club is hoping to work with Greenville County and the city of Mauldin to build a multipurpose stadium.Below is a statement from Joe Erwin, chairman and owner Greenville Triumph:”While we are disappointed in tonight’s vote of the Finance Committee, we are not discouraged. We appreciate the committee’s consideration and respect the process.”We were not asking for this committee to approve the stadium. What we were seeking was the adoption of a resolution instructing County Administrator Joe Kernell to work with us to put together a formal proposal that could be brought to the County Council for consideration.”It was to be the beginning of a conversation about how a public-private partnership could build a community asset owned by the county to the benefit of all.”Building a stadium by way of a public-private partnership makes sense to us. It’s how this community has accomplished so many great projects that have paid dividends in the form of jobs, tax revenues, and additional economic development. “We strongly believe a multi-use stadium such as we’ve proposed would be great for our community.”Tonight’s committee vote doesn’t kill the stadium project. However, due to the urgency to build a forever home for the Greenville Triumph, the vote tonight by the five-member Finance Committee will change the nature of the project and its proposed uses as we explore our options.”
