Meta has officially announced the removal of a controversial Instagram feature that allowed users to modify public profile pictures using artificial intelligence. This decision follows intense backlash from everyday users and major talent agencies regarding significant privacy and consent risks.
The feature in question, known as Muse Image, was developed by the Meta Superintelligence Labs. It enabled individuals to manipulate photos from public Instagram accounts simply by typing the user’s handle (@username).
A major point of contention was that these AI-driven modifications occurred without notifying the original content creators or obtaining their consent. The tool was active for only a few days before its retirement, driven by immediate and severe pushback from critics and prominent talent agencies like CAA. Detractors highlighted the clear potential for the technology to be abused for creating inappropriate content, deepfakes, and violating individual privacy rights.
Meta’s Response and Official Statement
In an official statement, Meta acknowledged that the feature “missed the mark.” The tech giant clarified that its original intention was to provide an innovative, creative tool while still giving users autonomy over how their public content was referenced. However, due to the overwhelmingly negative feedback from the community, Meta opted for a permanent removal rather than an update.
An excerpt from Meta’s official blog post explained:
“Earlier this week, we announced that one of the ways to generate images in Meta AI would be by tagging public Instagram accounts with the @ symbol as a reference. Our intention was to provide a useful creative tool and give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We heard feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it is no longer available.”
While Meta is stepping back from this specific feature, the company continues to develop other AI technologies, including its Muse Spark 1.1 model, which focuses on autonomous programming and PC control.
