Redwood outlasts Branson in five-setter

Kaley Mathews piled up 42 assists, eight blocks and five kills as the Redwood High girls volleyball team to a crucial 25-15, 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-7 victory against Branson on Thursday night.

The victory gives the Giants (17-3, 5-1 MCAL) a leg up over the Bulls (16-2, 4-2) in the race for homecourt during the first round of the MCAL playoffs, which takes place in two weeks.

Brooke Leslie had a team-high 23 kills and added eight digs and a pair of aces. Emma McDermott had 18 kills and eight digs, Jaden Hendrickson had seven kills and four blocks and Sophia Shaw added 15 digs, five assists and a pair of aces.

Branson was led by the outside hitting duo of Sadie Snipes and Elena Fisher, who combined for 32 kills. Gia Fisher had 28 digs and 10 assists while Eva Lacy had 12 kills. Setter Logan Tusher had 35 assists and 14 digs.

Girls tennis

San Domenico picked up its first league victory of the season with Friday’s 4-1 win over Bay Valley Conference rival Conference. Olivia Ginsberg earned a 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 2 singles and teammate Zoe Manerud rallied at No. 3 singles for a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 10-7 win. The doubles teams of Scarlett Wilson and Lola del Palacio, and Lily Reeser and Mina Swalm both earned three-set wins.

  • Archie Williams swept MCAL rival San Rafael, 7-0, on Friday, although the Bulldogs put up a fight to avoid the shutout. In a back-and-forth struggle at No. 3 doubles, the Peregrine Falcons’ Maya Evans and Sarah Hughes overcame the Bulldogs’ Evelyn Santa Rosa and Enu Villanueva, 6-1, 5-7, 10-6. Archie Williams’ Carly Amborn, Audrey Johnston, Hailey Hagan and Allegra DiCarpegna swept the singles competition.

College water polo

Stefan Venne, a Drake graduate, scored twice in a 21-5 victory for UC Davis over host Concordia on Friday. It was the second-highest total for the Aggies this season. Venne has nine goals and nine assists in 15 games for the No. 9-ranked Aggies, who are 2-0 in the Western Water Polo Association. Davis is scheduled to play next at Santa Clara on October 14.

Boys water polo

Haakon Lacy has 10 blocks to lead Archie Williams to a 16-10 victory against Acalanes on Thursday night. Mac Berry led the team in scoring with five goals.

Ace

Larkspur’s John Miller carded a hole-in one-Friday at the Meadow Club. He used a seven iron on the 131-yard 11th hole.
