EXCLUSIVE: In a highly competitive situation, Warner Bros. has snapped up the Mark Ronson feature package Night People, based on his bestselling coming-of-age memoir, which as reported last month, has Brad Pitt’s Plan B aboard to produce.
Published with Grand Central on September 14, Ronson’s memoir (full title: Night People: How to Be a DJ in ’90s New York City) was an immediate New York Times Bestseller and Sunday Times Bestseller in the UK. Both a personal coming-of-age story and a snapshot of a transformative era in music and nightlife, the book recounts the elite record producer’s early years, unpacking how his upbringing and family life informed his tastes, ambitions, and eventual path into DJing in ’90s NYC.
Ronson vividly depicts the clubs, record shops, and venues that shaped a cultural scene without equal, as well as the struggles and uncertainties that came with building his career in music. Good World Productions will exec produce the film adaptation.
An Oscar, Golden Globe, and nine-time Grammy-winning producer and songwriter, as well as a globally recognized DJ, Ronson has deep ties to Warner Bros., having done his most celebrated work in film at the studio. In 2019, he won his Oscar for writing the hit tune “Shallow,” from their Bradley Cooper pic A Star Is Born, with Lady Gaga. This led to him crafting the score and soundtrack for Greta Gerwig’s $1.4 billion-grossing cultural sensation, Barbie.
Warner Bros. and Plan B are also frequent collaborators — most recently, on the global theatrical releases F1, Mickey 17 and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Known for blending pop, soul, funk, and hip-hop influences, Ronson is one of the best known and most highly respected figures in contemporary music. Most recently, he teamed up with Lorne Michaels as an executive producer for SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, curating a one-night-only event featuring legendary musical guests which was recently nominated for an Emmy.
Tapped by Gerwig for a reteam on her Narnia movie at Netflix, where he’ll serve as composer, Ronson has released five successful albums of his own while collaborating on other projects with artists like Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, Adele, Paul McCartney, and Gaga. He is repped by CAA and Good World Management.
