With about nine months to go until next year’s primary elections, a San Antonio native says he will challenge U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett to be the Democratic candidate representing Texas’ 35th congressional district.
David Anderson, Jr., who has most recently held managerial positions at Jackson Hewitt Tax Service and the AT&T Center, will officially launch his campaign later this month, according to a Tuesday news release. Anderson, 29, is currently studying public health at Texas State University, his website states.
“Lloyd Doggett and I agree on many areas where we need to make improvements, but we have fundamental differences in how to make those improvements,” he said.
The 35th district currently stretches from Austin to San Antonio, but it’s unclear if it’ll have the same boundaries next year. State lawmakers will redraw Texas’ political map later this fall using delayed 2020 census data.
Anderson said his focus right now is on the current 35th district, but added, “My staff and I are monitoring the resdistricting process very closely.”
“Even if there is an unforeseen circumstance, I will continue to run for a congressional seat that represents San Antonio,” he said in an email.
Doggett has represented his hometown of Austin in Congress since 1995, sailing through two redistricting cycles. Most recently, he easily fended off 2020 primary challenger Rafael Alcoser III, earning nearly three-quarters of the vote.
The congressman’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Anderson’s kickoff event will take place at 7:30 p.m. on June 23 at Elsewhere Garden Bar & Kitchen.
