The Oscar-winning directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once will be in one place on Feb. 18.
Filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, better known as the Daniels, have been tapped to receive honors during the ACLU of Southern California’s Centennial Awards, which will be held at the Westin Bonaventure in Downtown Los Angeles. The pair will receive Bill of Rights Awards during a program that will also see trophies handed out to Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph and poet, author and activist Alok Vaid-Menon. Per the organization, Bill of Rights Awards are presented to those “who have meaningfully challenged the status quo.”
ACLU’s Centennial Awards will be hosted by actor and activist Jason George with special appearances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Martin Sheen, Shari Belafonte, Dule Hill, Stephanie Hsu and poet Rupi Kaur. Composer Laura Karpman will perform a piece from the Oscar-nominated score she worked on for Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction.
“Today — and for 100 years — the ACLU SoCal is committed to ensuring that ‘we the people’ means all of us,” said Marcus Benigno, chief communications and marketing officer at the ACLU SoCal. “We are proud to honor artists and change-makers who use their talent and power to create a just and inclusive world.”
The Daniels are praised for highlighting immigrant, queer and Asian-American characters in their work. Ralph, who founded the DIVA Foundation, has long been a champion for the LGBTQ community and used her platform to speak out on equity, inclusion, food and housing security, social justice and eliminating the stigma around HIV/AIDS while raising money for a cure. Vaid-Menon, also known as Alok, contributes work and conversation that seeks to elevate “trans ordinariness” and break down gender barriers.
