Biden says there’s no place in America for political violence as he honors Jan. 6 ‘heroes’

President Joe Biden on Friday said there’s no place in the U.S. for political violence or intimidating voters, as he marked the second anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by honoring more than a dozen individuals.

“History will remember your names,” Biden said during a White House ceremony, addressing recipients of the Presidential Citizens Medal. “It’ll remember your courage. It’ll remember your bravery.”

Among the 14 honored were members of the Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department, including Officer Brian Sicknick, who died while defending Congress and the Capitol complex.

The president also recognized Michigan’s secretary of state, Democrat Jocelyn Benson, and Rusty Bowers, a Republican former Arizona House speaker, who resisted pressure to overturn the election results in their states.

On Jan. 6, 2021, supporters of then-President Donald Trump assaulted the Capitol, interrupting for several hours the congressional certification of Biden’s victory over Trump.

Biden on Friday said that despite Americans’ differences of opinion, “we must say clearly with a united voice that there’s no place — zero, zero — in America for voter intimidation or political violence.”
