Sports Digest: UMaine field hockey rallies in fourth to beat Cal

COLLEGES

Chloe Walton scored in the fourth quarter to lift the University of Maine to a 4-3 win over Cal in an America East field hockey game on Friday in Orono.

Poppy Lambert scored earlier in the fourth to tie the game for the Black Bears (9-3, 4-0 America East). Walton also scored 33 seconds into the game to give Maine the lead and Lambert added a goal later in the first for Maine.

Caoimhe Bryne and Kiki de Bruijne scored in the first and Sara Stone in the third for Cal.

Cato Knipping for Cal and Mia Borley for the Black Bears each recorded seven saves.

SOCCER

U.S. WOMEN: Ten weeks after conquering Europe, England women proclaimed themselves ready for even more after beating the world champion United States 2-1 in a friendly at Wembley Stadium in London.

Lauren Hemp and Georgia Stanway scored to help England beat the U.S. for the first time since 2017 and less than 10 months before the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Stanway’s penalty in the 33rd minute put the hosts in front for good before 76,893 fans. Victory extended England’s unbeaten run to 23 games under coach Sarina Wiegman.

England took the lead in the 10th when Beth Mead sent a low cross into the box. U.S. defender Alana Cook tried to make a sliding block but the ball wiggled through to Hemp, who finished from close range.

The Americans equalized just before the half-hour mark. Millie Bright tried to pass out of the back to a tightly covered Stanway, and Lindsey Horan poked the ball forward to Sophia Smith, who turned and fired low to the left corner past a diving Mary Earps.

Stanway made amends from the spot, though, shooting the ball into the right corner as goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher went the wrong way.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Manchester City was fined $289,000 for fans invading the pitch after winning the Premier League title in May.

The English Football Association said Man City admitted a disciplinary charge over the scenes that followed a 3-2 win against Aston Villa.

GOLF

EUPOPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP: Jon Rahm’s four-footer for birdie on the final hole just missed the cup, capping a frustrating day for the home-crowd favorite at the Spanish Open in Madrid and dropping him two shots off the lead.

Paul Waring and Stephen Gallacher shared a one-shot lead at the halfway mark.

Rahm, seeking a third Spanish Open title to equal Seve Ballesteros’ victories, followed his opening round of 63 with a 3-under 68 at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

LIV: Richard Bland, Branden Grace and Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra upstaged their more-illustrious opponents to shoot 7-under 65s and share the lead after the first round of the LIV Golf Invitational-Bangkok.

Marc Leishman and Ian Poulter were a stroke behind while Kim Sihwan, Brooks Koepka and Morgan Jediah were among those two behind in the 54-hole event.

TENNIS

ASTANA OPEN: Novak Djokovic beat Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-3 in his quarterfinal match in Astanta, Kazakhstan.

Djokovic conceded a 3-0 lead but broke Khachanov for the first set with a backhand volley. He broke Khachanov for 3-1 in the second and finished their quarterfinal with an ace.

Daniil Medvedev awaits in the semifinals. Medvedev has a 4-6 win-loss record against Djokovic, and they haven’t met since the Paris final last November, when Djokovic won in three sets.

JAPAN OPEN: Taylor Fritz advanced to the Japan Open semifinals in Tokyo after Nick Kyrgios withdrew because of a left knee injury.

Fritz, who spent a week in quarantine after testing testing positive for COVID-19 in Seoul last week, will next face Denis Shapovalov. The seventh-seeded Canadian defeated Borna Coric 6-4, 6-3.

Frances Tiafoe reached the semifinals by beating Miomir Kecmanovic 6-0, 6-4. Tiafoe, who has not dropped a set in Tokyo, will be making his fourth semifinal appearance this season.

Tiafoe will next take on Kwon Soon-woo. The South Korean defeated Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-0.
