What was the starting point for this project?
It’s a continuation from last year’s project, which was basically a change in how I work and a move away from making collections and being part of the fashion system. This is the first time I’ve ever made work that does not involve the real physical body. I think I really needed to move away from anything with assembling clothes, because up until the end of 2019, I felt so stuck in that fashion system with, you know, the deadlines and showrooms, and the business part of it. I still feel that I need to step away a bit and get to know my core interests or my drive and my place as a creative person.
What is “Drapery Studies” about?
This project is about me trying to understand my fascination with the fold and drapery; looking at the fold completely free from being put into a piece of garment, or even on the body. Hence the title, “Drapery Studies,” because that’s always been the core of the practice. I look at [the pieces] and I see bodies or movement and human-like figures, and I’m not sure if that’s just because I’ve been working on bodies and in fashion for so long that it’s kind of inherent in me.
