Companion Looks Like It Could Be Next Year’s Grown-Up M3GAN

The best trailers tell us everything and nothing about the movie. We see just enough to get us interested but have no actual idea what the movie is about. And that’s exactly what we get with this first trailer for a movie called Companion, which will be released by Warner Bros. in January. We think we know what it’s about, but really we have no clue.

Written and directed by Drew Hancock, Companion stars Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) and Jack Quaid (The Boys) as some sort of couple. Only, well, there are obviously some serious things wrong here which the handcuffs and candle will clue you into. Check out the teaser trailer for Companion and we can discuss after.

So—she’s a robot, right? Maybe Quaid’s character lost his wife and he bought a new version of her that goes a little crazy? That’s at least what the film kind of feels like—M3GAN but with an adult companion. But, honestly, I’m not quite sure.

Here’s what we are sure of. In addition to Thatcher, who’ll be coming off the awesome Heretic at the time, and Quaid, always popular thanks to The Boys, Companion co-stars Lukas Gage (Smile 2), Megan Suri (Never Have I Ever), the amazing Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), and the Grand Inquisitor himself, Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi). The Barbarian connection is producers Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Zach Cregger, and Roy Lee, who made that film and are now making this one.

The only clue Warner Bros. is offering up about Companion’s story is a website that leads to a phone number you can text to get your own companion. The teaser reads: “Hey you. Tired of swiping? Sick of getting ghosted? Are you feeling like a part of you is missing? FindYourCompanion.com is guaranteed to find you a Companion who’s made for you.” The site links to a phone number that links to a Chatbot which, while I love you dear reader, I was not going to do. But if you want to, be our guest and report back. But you do get that robot vibe from it.

Sticking to just the trailer though, there are some really great reveals and images here. The “wife” being handcuffed to the chair at the start. Her forearm being burned at the end. The blood, the car, the guns, none of it quite adds up. Which we think is fantastic.

Companion will kick off 2025 on January 10 only in theaters. Are you interested?
