The 16th annual Balloonfest is taking flight this weekend — bringing fun, food and entertainment to Lycoming County.
The event will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Hot air balloons will launch early morning and late afternoon, weather permitting and other events, including airshow attractions such as Paradigm Aviator, Geronimo Skydiving, Whiskey 7, a BT-13 warbird; Jason Flood airshows, along with ATV drag races; BMX, heavy equipment rodeo, puppets, shows, vendors and a laser light show will commence over the weekend. The laser show is choreographed to music by Daryl Lewis, owner of Datman Productions.
“This is a unique, family-friendly, affordable event with something for everyone,” said Sandy Spencer, chairperson of the festival committee.
“Our entertainers are all professionals and a person would have to look far to find an event offering so much of a variety of things to see and do for such an affordable price. And parking is free,” Spencer said.
Balloonfest started in 2006, when the incoming Rotary president at the time was looking for a way to increase membership and involvement.
“He presented the vision of a hot air balloon festival as something people would want to be a part of. What started with hot air balloons, vendors and some entertainment has grown into something much bigger,” Spencer said.
It was first an event for Montoursville Rotary, and then after a few years, Hughesville, Muncy and Williamsport Rotary clubs joined as well.
“Last year, the committee took the steps to become a stand-alone 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a focus on STEM learning and how those subjects affect aviation,” Spencer said. “It is so much work, but when it all comes together and we see people enjoying what has been created by a small group of volunteers, it is rewarding.”
The Balloonfest committee is in need of volunteers.
“We really do still need some [volunteers] and you can sign up online to join us, the committee,” Spencer said. “We certainly want to thank those who make it happen. The volunteers who come out to work at our gates, that work together all year, and most importantly, our loyal and generous sponsors. Without the sponsors supporting this event with their dollars, services, products and more, we could not keep it so affordable and offer what we do. A big thank you to all.”
Spots for vendors, balloon rides and Whiskey 7 rides are all still available to book online.
“Advance ticket pricing is available online until 5 p.m. on Thursday, or in ticket outlets. Gate pricing is slightly higher but tickets are also available at the gate,” Spencer said.
