Amy Poehler reacts to being called ‘poor man’s Tina Fey’

Amy Poehler is good friends with Tina Fey — but she didn’t always appreciate being compared to the 30 Rock star.

In the debut episode of her Good Hang podcast, the Parks and Recreation actress recalled an uncomfortable experience she had with Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals, who honored her with the group’s Woman of the Year title in 2015 — and compared her to her Baby Mama costar during the proceedings.

Poehler said that the ceremony consisted of “sniveling guys roasting me,” noting that anyone honored by the theater society should anticipate some humor at their own expense. “You know what you’re getting into, and they kind of come out and roast you,” she explained.

Fey, who was a guest on the inaugural episode, questioned why anyone agrees to humor the Harvard crowd in the first place. “Why isn’t everyone just like, ‘No, nerds. Thanks, no thanks’?” she asked. “Why does anyone go?”

Poehler agreed with Fey’s negative sentiment toward the Hasty Pudding spectacle, but explained that she came prepared with her own jokes to fire back at the students. “I don’t know [why anyone goes],” she said. “But I really did my homework on that one, and I had really good jokes that I was proud of. And I really crushed them.”

The Fey comparison came once Poehler was asked to give a speech. “I’ve gotten this more than once, and I hope this isn’t awkward for you for me to say it in front of you, but definitely people like to say, ‘You’re the poor man’s Tina Fey,'” Poehler recalled. “This kid said it right before I went up.”

Poehler didn’t hesitate to give the student a piece of her mind. “I gave him the finger, which everyone was shocked about,” she said. “And I don’t know if it was the right — I mean, I did it, I guess, but I go, ‘F— you.'”

The comedian did have some reservations about accosting the student so publicly, but ultimately stands by her decision. “I was like, ‘You’re on a dais, Amy,'” she said. “But then, f— Harvard.”

Fey concurred, “F— Harvard, f— Harvard.”

Poehler joked, “I mean, those f—ing assholes — but, but, but thank you for inviting me. It was a real honor.”

Fey agreed with her sentiment. “Don’t lose my number forever. Go f— yourselves.”
